Who We Are— Turista Libre [Free Tourist] is a series of atypical day tours in Tijuana and northern Baja California, Mexico, led by an Ohio native who now calls the border city home. Since 2009 we’ve led treks to the city’s art and culture hot spots, museums, concerts, sporting events, festivals, historical sites, flea markets, farmers' markets, eateries, breweries, wineries, roller rinks and water parks. Our mission is to steer open-minded travelers around Tijuana's obvious cliches. To introduce them to the highlights locals know and love. To experience the authentic side of a city that was built for tourists. No narco warfare. No donkey shows. No gringo stereotypes. The best in alternative tourism.

How We Roll— Turista Libre meets on the U.S. side of the new pedestrian border crossing at the San Ysidro trolley stop. From there, the group crosses into Mexico on foot and walks two blocks to our ride, a retired U.S. school bus borrowed from Tijuana's public transport system that's piloted by husband-and-wife chauffeurs Benjamin and Pilar. What it lacks in conventional tour bus amenities like reclining seats, air conditioning and fully functioning shocks, it more than makes up it for in character -- all in the spirit of making the journey as authentic and memorable as the destination, pues.
